North Wexford Whiting Hunt

#1 Post by alby »

People:Me and the old man

Duration: 4 hours

Tide:over the top & down

Weather:winter sunshine, not a breath of wind

Bait:lug & crab

Rigs: a bit of everything

Results:plenty of codling, a bass, couple of dogs, couple of whiting.

Report:
Me and the old man went on our annual xmas whiting hunt, he love's them, there his favourite fish and he wanted a couple for the pan, he only fishes once every year in December and he blanked for 2006 so he was at me to catch a few whiting. Shouldn't be a problem

On the way to where we wanted to fish we had to pass around a little cove and this is where disaster struck (for the old man thank god :D ) He was walking around the head land and a wave began to break coming towards him, he popped into a stride but there was a mini stumble and down he went, and duly got a lash of the incoming wave, i ran down and dragged the old codger out, and when we both sussed he was alright, the two of us had tears in our eyes from the laughter. The smail quickly changed though when I reliased my 80 lug & dozen lovely fresh crab were moving towards wales but amazingly another wave brought the hole lot back up onto the beach, didn't loose a single worm ir crab....I was amazed.

Anyway drama over we began fishing, I had a cast and then got the tea on the go, i was pouring it ut when the old man said my rod was hooped over behind me, turned round and duly struck into a solid nodder!!! Next cast, same thing and we pretty much hit a cod or a dog most casts

The old man was cracking up by this stage, we just couldn't get past the codling to get his whiting, every time he strike a bite he'd be disapointed to reel in yet another codling, not babies but all in the 2 - 3.5lb range. I got a savage slackliner and lifted into a better fish, battled all the way and then I saw a lovely bar of silver in the surf, about 5 lbs then disaster, everything wnet slack, ah well. Next cast same again but this time was only a schoolie hooked in the lip, slipped him back after a pic.

It'll be December '08 God willing for the old man to get that whiting
