#1 Post by liamdenne »

well lads. what are the odds of catching cod from deep wrecks and reefs inshore on the SW coast? i have caught them sporadicly down the years from a drifting boat when feathering for macks and pollock and a few last yr on jelly worms. should i b looking at the edge of a reef or on the reef itself? shads? and what kind colour? size rigs etc?

Phillip Horgan, a well known Cork angler, tells me that orange or black 6" shads work well over wrecks fished on a boom with a short length between shad and boom. I cant vouch for it as I've never fished down there, but he is a one time Munster champion boat angler, so I assume he knows what he's talking about.
Jim from Cork is the man to ask on this one I reckon !

Phillip reckoned a max of 3 ft - I think I remember Jim saying something similar in an article in Irish Angler. I thought that was quite short but I'm not about to contradict either of them as they've probably forgotten more about fishing than I'll ever know.

I've never tried it as shads don't seem to be as effective up round where I fish, though I'm sure over wrecks they'd be grand.

Give it a go and see how you get on - worst that'll happen is you'll catch nothing - I'm sure they both found out by trying different methods and working out what worked best.
