hey lads anyone got any hints on a deep diving floater for trolling? maybe to say a depth of about 29ft? are the rapala husky boys the ones to go for?

Hi Liam,
The Yo-zuri Crystal Minnow Deep Diver goes down to 20feet and is a tremendous lure. You could also use the Hydro Magnum Deep Diver with added weight to get real deep.

The Rappala Husky jerk doesn't go down that far - it's a suspender; it will stay at depth if you halt the retreive. I have a few Yo Zuri Crystal/Arc minnows, but not the deep versions. Another possiblity is the Halco Poltergeist - has a huge lip that sends it down like a rocket. Never used mine yet....All my other deep lures (and I have a few!) don't go down to 29ft.

if u wouldnt mind. also i have a question on shads. if u wanna target big fish what size shad should u use to stop the smaller pollock and cod? 5 " 6" or what?

What you really need is is a diving vane:

Luhr Jensen Jet Diver

on trials i have had using the thunderstick in the bath i reckon it dives to at least 6feet. towed it behind a boat the odd time too! so whats the point of a deep diver that dosnt dive deep?

I wish...I should at least be getting a discount for bulk at this stage, since I have a few...

I think I might get the deep diving vane at some stage - nothing like a nice wriggly rattley lure deep down to get the Pollock going.

Also I read that cod would readily take deep diving plugs, if there were any cod around these parts.

How big is your bath? Actually, in terms of trolling plugs, 2 to 3 metres *is* considered deep. I had a look at a few of mine and some of the "deep" divers don't even go that deep. Take Halco, for example: the deep diver goes 2m, the standard plug goes 1m.

If you're casting, a sinker can be let to sink deep, and then reeled back in, but trolling, the depth is fairly constant. Go for the diving vane!

The diving vane is the only way to go. I think you can still get the Luhr Jensen ones from [url=http://www.harrisangling.co.uk]Harris Angling[/url] I have to shallow diver that dives to 50ft. If you have less line out it will dive to about 2 thirds of the line you have out. It takes a bit of playing with to get a feel for the depth the lure is working at. It is also a great way of working smaller lures at depth.

Liam, the other alternative (not that I recommend it - it's sledge hammer to crack an egg) is to use a downrigger. This is a reel of wire that holds a big weight (4-20lb of lead!) to keep it down. Above the weight is a clip arrangement which holds the fishing line. The plug is trolled behind the big weight, and on a strike, the fish pulls the line from the clip and you reel it in. That can go as deep as the reel of steel wire is long (100's of feet.) It's the same idea as in a spreader system for trolling lots of lures behind a boat, only it goes downwards

seen them used on total fishing with plonker hayes. u can get them here but they cost a bomb and whats the point if u can get a plug down that deep. I know we have gone over this before but whats the optimum speed to troll? and how do u know what speed u r doing ?

I read somewhere that a plug can be trolled at 1mph per inch of plug. Too fast and it twists about. The Rapala Sliver can go quite fast - I read somewhere that it swims true up to 9kts.

If you have a GPS or a Fishfinder, these can give you your boat speed.

I really need to do some work.....

well we have a longliner with a 9.9 on the back of her. i wonder what speeds we can do. the slowest seems to b a bit fast i reckon, would b like a very fast walk r slow jog
