fresh year round peeler supplier

#1 Post by eric »

now before you ask i got the ok from kieran to run this thread. i have a friend who's been keeping aquatics, marine or tropical for about 15 years and he also happens to be a keen angler.he's just finished a fisheries management degree in england and knows how hard it can be to obtain decent fresh crab at certain times of the year. so he decided he would try breeding crabs, nursing them to adulthood, getting them to peel and then sell them to us anglers at a good price. he is interested in doing green shore crabs but especially the velvets, hermits and edibles.he has successfully kept them in an ornamental tank but will be upgrading to larger systems.
he successfully breeds tropical marine shrimps and clown fish on a commercial scale so he's no stranger to this sort of thing.

he asked me to ask anglers would they be interested in this type of service, to avoid him waisting time, money and effort. so is anyone here interested and no im not getting commision :(

id be interested to see how they perform against "wild" crabs i.e i'd rather use dug rag then farmed rag. but saying that it is getting harder to find crabs especially when the smoothies hit the beaches so i would say id be interested. is your mate Dublin Based?

The guy who founded North East Sea Baits in he UK had the same kind of background as your friend, he was very lucky because just as he finished Uni they built the Alcan aluminium smelter on the coast, this meant a supply of warm water was there for him free of charge and his Ragworm farm took off big time......a few years later it was a natural progression to try to farm crab.....they werent succesful....the price would have been far to high and at the time (almost 20 years ago) anglers would pay big time in the winter for crab to be shipped up from the south of England. I only mention this because it fits in with your friends idea.

That said....anyone who is successful at farming crab should be able to make it pay IMHO even though crab is not thought of as the number one bait that it used to be years ago.

Good to see someone wanting to do it though.....to answer the question...I think it would be worth it.

1 euro is the standard bait dealer price, they can tend to put them up to 1.50 when the limerick estuary isn't peeling as well and finding is hard, so his price is in line with present prices anyway.
Put him in contact with Dave Tilly, he'd probably take stacks of them off him at the right times of year.

To be fair, i'd say most angler would be interested in having a definite supply of crab during the winter or any time.

I would for one.

Wish your mate all the best for this venture!

eric,
with all due respect to your friend you will find breeding peelers all year is a impossibility , bringing crabs on from a natural situation, slowing the peel,or accelerating the peel yes i do myself in my tanks but only after collecting the natural resourse from the shore and not trying to breed them,,
get in touch with swansea bait direct they have invested millions into bait breeding ,worm yes ,rag yes crab a big no no

eric good idea but basically it will be hard ive a good idea who we are talking about here ,, yes he is good with his fish alright but the probs with doing what he wants to do are to cost efective,, basically breeding fish and selling em is easy as it doesnt matter on there size your selling there is a market for every size fish crabs is a different story,,,
honestly if it was that easy my shop would just have tanks full of peelers,,,

rock,,
i know some very serious bait guys in the uk who breed rag, maddies, black and blow lug who have had grants from the uk goverment and invested years of personal time and money to get their buisness to a peak,we have talked crab over the years but is still not possible to breed a crab to the natural state of peel dont you guys think that if it WAS POSSIBLE TO BREED CRAB ,it would have been done by now and plastered all over main stream mags also would lobster come into that market,,
and spider crab,THATWOULD PUT DEADLIEST CATCH OFF OUR SCREENS
think of the world changing things that would happen if we could breed that little shore crab????????????????????????????????????????

cazz, they do breed the crabs off deadliest catch and farm them, but people still prefer wild, you can often hear them complaining about farmed crab and ow it damages their prices,
second, mate has successfully bred crab and raised the small crab on rotifers and zoo plankton shipped in from florida, their currently very small and their has been a high mortality rate, its his first go and its not bad going considering you said it couldn't be done?

yea breeding crabs can be done,,,,, has been done for the tropical fish market,
but def not cost efective enough to sell em at 1 euro a pop,,,,, lovely dream but basically impossible,,,,,,,

think of heating bills,,, time,,, food,,, to get each crab to size not alone tanks,,, and accesories,,, all for 1 euro a crab,,

eric,

i dont think the lad looking into the idea has considered the costs associated with the venture properly. i also doubt that he would have the economies of scale to make it worth the time, effort and cost

at the moment he has around twelve systems in his fish shed, he says it costs him around 500 euros a month for all the electricity and food, he's planing on converting 3 of those to crab systems.
if he cant breed them cost effectively he can always go collecting hardbacks but he's convinced he can do it.
