Codling.

Not looking for any marks for them. But are they more often than not caught on sandy beaches or rough ground and are they usually caught at afair distance. Never fished for them before.

hi ya jack, in our area there are loads of cod to catch, with the best marks being over rough ground, although the clean patches on killiney do produce but only during a coloured sea. the tea rooms and shankill area hold good numbers of red codling averaging about a pound or so but its fairly expensive stuff, you will lose leads. the best area for consistency would be be around sorento point where the tidal rush gets the cod feeding, uptide tactics are whats required, cast cast up towards bird island and let the lead settle around the slipway on the main island or vice versa depending on the tide.

to fish for cod its good enough and sand beach too,stormy conditions are the best time to hunt for numbers and size,of course would be better if the rocks near by,more calm sea produces best over rocky bottom,if sea is calm and clear you may need to fish distance,and if its blowing to your face sometimes worth to try at 20-30 meters distance,just simply search for them not waiting till they come,whats all i need to catch them,hope this helps

jack i'd say a cast of about 80-100yds is necessary to clear the rocks and avoid the tide washing you back on to them prematurely. if your really good say 400yds you can reach the bank roughly halfway between the land and the island. which produces nice flats, whiting and codling off the boat.

rougher the better... stock up on leads.

You can also get them from deep water rock marks on the west coast.

We get them here but due to the fishing spots being so dangerous I wouldnt like to send someone off to fish there, as its trecherous and just one look at the sea would determine it for me whether its safe or not.

Fishing from the deep water rock marks is the same both day and night as some of these marks are so deep light never penatrates the bottom.

An old fishing buddy of mine who sadly passed away this year used to catch em up to ten lbs from these marks using the technique of a small hook baited with a small bait which is tied to a bigger hook or he also used half a fillet of mackerel and squid cocktail.

We must get some fresh peeler some time and try em out .
