Results:nothing except a strange stuff there was in the water so move to East pier.

thats a pity, i think there might be a sewage leak in seapoint leading to a huge algae bloom

In fact it still stay a lot of algae, but disgusting one, exactly like in sea point, and there is so many that you can't fish correctly each time you have 6kg of that on your line... ( even you put the top of the rod higher), don't know exactly what it is but I hope it still disappear during the winter... I think there must be fish over there, because there is thousands of rags in the mud....
I'm moving in Killiney in two weeks, so maybe I'll never come back fishing there...

Regarding digging bait in blackrock. I live in the village and for the last number of years my brother and I have dug lug on the beach. We never did a huge amount of digging but would always get enough depending on what sort of fishing sorti we would be going on. However, since the appearance of the heavy algae bloom this year the numbers of lug to be found on the beach have diminished totally. During the high tide of late I walked all the way out to the "low" tide water mark to see what could be seen and also to dig bait. It was my first time down in a couple of months due to my newly found fondness for SWFF. There was a very deep layer of algae and my friend informed me it was a result of the seapoint sewage station purging untreated raw sewage in may-june during the very heavy rainfall. Seapoint has since lost it Blue flag for swimming and only barley avoided being designated an area unfit for bathing. There are literally no lug casts on the beach and the only place I could find worms after an hour of digging was in the small harbour area down at the ruins in an area know locally as "privo" (seven lug and one rag). Of note, this is one of the few areas that had not been plagued with algea.

So my tip would be, if you are looking to dig worm head further into town and avoid blackrock/booterstown.

have to disagree there a couple of weeks ago i picked up 30 lug,50 maddies, a few whites and a few peeler crab in a bout 1 and half hours in seapoint

Hey Eric,

Maybe the lug had been very deep or hadn't been active the days I was down there recently. But I just found it strange that there was such a lack of worm and casts in Blackrock area. Where abouts in seapoint did you go? Near the pier, dartstation, swimming area? and how far out?

I have found three days ago a lot of small and bigger rags just by lifting stones at low tide, and a few peeler too here in Blackrock, cose to the dart station...Just follow birds...

i get the maddies at the place where the water comes out from the dart station near the mussel rock.
the lug and whites i get near the slipway.

Yes I think the little river is a great place for the bait, it made two times that I find peelers under rocks at this place... for the worm I just look where the birds are and after I go digging where they are...It's not fair play but.... :wink:

that sounds like very slow digging, what were you using...... a spoon :lol: :lol:

last week at sandymount (these figures are conservative, rounded down as opposed to up), in 2 hours i had : 100 lug, 300 maddies, 50 rag, 5 peelers and a few whites cockles and clams.

Exactly a spoon, in fact a coffee spoon... We have just looked for a few baits for a couple of hours fishing, but sure if you dig, you can make a lot of worms... Why there is all this shore birds (sand pipers, snipes, curlew...) they are all looking for worms...

the lug at booterstown are down really deep 7 forkfulls down , but they are whoppers , a size 3/0 hook is not to big in fact a 6/0 would be perfect these are bass/cod killers and worth the backache if its big fish you want ,but too big for a 1/0 on a three hook flapper , you are all talking about algae if its that brown goo that looks like poo that you are talking about its decomposing cabbage weed that has been around for months ,in booterstown it was about 18 inches deep up at the highwater line and boy did it stink any lug near it seemed to die probably due to lack of o2 ,saying that the beach from blackrock into kingstown is full of long balloons and little nappies a credit to the councilors who would stop us fishing :shock:

you sound like a shoveling beast paul :lol: :lol: :lol: i wish i had those skills, but seriously thats like good digging to me. unfortunately in seapoint your blind digging as the algae covers up the casts, their there but their hiding. where abouts in sandymount do you go, i used to get maddies by the booterstown stream but i find it hard to find decent rag anywhere around here perhaps im blind :oops:

Eric, you can get maddies by the stream that stays even when the tide is out by the corner of the nature reserve, you can get king rag in the stoney ground at the edges but it's hard digging, not sure about whites and lug there at all, I've never found them, but I've not done much digging there, I normally buy them off Dave Tilly.

places eoin mentioned are good,

go past the 1st 2 streams and you will find plenty of large lug.

algae seems to be getting worse rather than better. we need a good easterly storm to clear all the shite off the beaches

When you say the first two streams for Lug Paul where do you mean exactly?
