I heard of people having problems with sand jamming into the sports mag. into the mag adjustment. Never heard of the same problem on the mag elite's(which has a diffrent way of controlling the mag)

I believe the main diffrence between a mag elite and chrome rocket is the chrome rocket does not have mag breaking only centrifugal braking.

The chrome 6500 has brass side plates (hence the extra wieght)

IMHO the MagElite is better than the Sports Mag, as the Sports Mag has a problem with the mag-ring....the metal mag ring will break very easy if the rod is dropped, the newer version has a plastic mag ring, but the tiny screw that holds the mag carriage to the plastic mag ring on the inside is prone to threading....then the mag carriage drops off inside of the side plate and can cause damage.

The Sports Mag is a great idea for anyone wanting to use the magnets during a cast (as in tournament casting) but they just fell short of the design IMHO....thats Abu for you though

ive been using abu's for about 6 years i can honestly say the sports mag is crap compared to the mag elites, the new high speed is in my opinion the best beach casting reel ever made, i cant wait to see the new abu reel
species for 2009 (42)
species for 2010 (27)
species for 2011 (12)
species for 2012 (8)
best advice for catching species is girls dont like fishing and its hard to catch fish when you sell all your gear'

The new Abu is a 7500ct Mag High Speed, it will be in red to match up with the 6500ct Mag High Speed. Like the latter is will have all the new bells and whistles....new drags, new spool etc.

Lets hope the factory remembers to put the calibrations on the mag slidy, I cant believe no one noticed they'd forgot to do it on the 6500 before it hit the shops

BTW....its due in the shops mid December...just in time for Santa eh

Got a few abus myself, have to say, I absolutely love the Sportsmag. I have found it bulletproof compared to mag elites. I'm on my 3rd mag elite in 3 years and each one has had the same problem with the handle attachment wearing to the extent that the nut won't tighten the handle down properly due to threading. No such difficulties with the Sportsmag, even with the power handle. I would say however the mag elite has a few extra yards on the casting front but I don't find much of a difference fishing wise anyhow. I've abused the christ out of mine and had no problems with the mag slider which is most likely due to the fact I don't tend to mess with it, its set at about a 3rd and with one brake block its near foolproof. Just my opinion, I would say the mag elite is a nicer bit of engineering but I've found them to be a little too "soft" moreso due to abuse I would say.

Hi Eric,

I have a few of the abu's myself and whilst I love my Green Elite dearly I got the new Premium model recently and it's every bit as good if not better than the Green one. Silky smooth and feels so solid on the retrieve.

Highly recommend it! Looks the biz too!

Pete I had the same handle issue on the Green elite and I just took off the washer beneath the handle and the nut is now snugly in place with no problems. Might be worth a shot?

the chrome rocket only has brake blocks no mags (i think)the metal ring on a sports mag will jam if you dont maintain it a few drops of oil every now and then will keep it smooth (not wd40 it just helps gunk to stick worse)

Like most have said on here the Sports Mag is a lovely smooth reel even though I don't use it that much. I pair mine up with my Source Estuary Match or Supercast Bass. The mag ring jams up though and becomes a bit of a pain. Haven't taken mine apart yet since my visit to Brandon in September when I dropped it on the end plate but I think it's now bent as it struggled with a string of mackerel afterwards. Think it's going to cost me.

had my 2 green mag elites about 5yrs had no probs wot so ever but i do fish now mostly with my penn 525mags aint as smooth as the elites but obviously much more bomb proof ,thinking about getting the new hi speed abu mag just for that 631 retreive and a smoother feel, incidentally never had a problem with the penns either :P
