CANCELLED: winter whitefish 15/12/7 comp

#1 Post by jw »

Please post here if you are definately going on a winter whitefish
trip to fish reefs, stony and sandy ground six to twelve miles west of
loop head in county Clare. Since nobody can cast that far, its going
to be a boat trip, and i've booked the Clare Dragoon
http://www.fishandstay.com/boat/ from Carrigaholt as she is a top
class charter boat for comfort, speed, safety and skippers ability to
find fish. The target species are whiting, cod, haddock, hake,
pollack, ling, coalfish etc. Up to date reports from the boat are
posted here
http://www.shannon-fishery-board.ie/gui ... n_2007.htm
Even in August the whiting are an embarrassment to their kind, taking
whole mackerel baits and it is hoped to catch BIG whitefish in the
winter. The next available date is the 2nd December, so I've booked
that. The booking is weather dependent. If we can't get out to the
reefs the trip will be cancelled/postponed for another day. I think
boat hire is 480 for the day and up to eight can fish the boat. If
more people are definately coming, we could try for a second boat.

Bill Ryan is a shore fishing guide from the area
http://www.chillwithbill.com/ and he has offered to sponsor a specimen
competition on the day with a prize of a guided shore trip. (Bill has
51 Irish Specimen Fish Awards, you might have seen him on Wild Fishing
with Henry Gilbey).

I propose to organise the specimen competition with the points for
each fish as a percentage of the speciment weight, so an 11 pound
pollack would be 11x100/12=92 points, the best three species to
count. If nothing else it will be fun trying to do the sums rolling
about on the atlantic in December :-)

I'm putting my name in for this, if for some reason I am unable to make it and a replacement is not found, I will pay my share of the boat.

Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read.

The worst time to have a heart attack is while playing charades! Specially if your friends are no good at it.

Once again I'm late! If theres a drop out, I'll step into the space vacated.

second boat

#14 Post by jw »

10 lads fishing on the one boat in such deep water would lead to a lot of tangles, so
i've booked a second boat, the Deva skippered by Mikey Fennell. Five or six per boat
would give comfortable fishing. Since two boats is quite a lot of spondulix, i've pm everyone for a 50 euro deposit so people aren't stung
