B.A.S.S. Club comp, Garryvoe, Cork, 20-10-07

#1 Post by Tom Maher »

People:6

Duration:8pm-12

Tide:3.0m

Weather:Overcast, strong s/w winds

Bait:crab, lug, mackerel, razorfish, rag

Rigs:various

Results:9 fish between 5 of us, 1 blank.

Catch and Release:: Yes

Report:It was dark when we started and we were fishing right in front of the Garryvoe hotel. As i was wading out to cast i fell into a hole up to my knee, not a good start. As soon as the line hit the water it was being hit with weed and being dragged to my left and slowly inshore. After an hour i got my first fish, a coalie of 37cm. i went up to the next peg to get my card marked and found that i wasnt the only one having difficulty, everyone further along the beach was losing traces because of weed and getting stuck on retrieval, the only thing saving me from the same fate was the fact that i was using 40lb braid as my mainline.
After another 1hr 30 min i got my 2nd coalie (37cm again) and when i went to get my card marked i was told that nothing had changed for everyone else.
At the end of the comp 4 of us had 2 fish each and 1 had 1 fish, the guy on the last peg blanked.

If you are going fishing around this area, go to ballinwilling or ballycrenane - as long as there is no weed on them, its easier fishing and there may be more fish.

Even without the weed it would have been bad, everyone had a few snags on rocks etc.

Fished ferrypoint today and the weed was worse, the line hit the water and was dragged straight away. Hopefully the bigger tides this week will shift the weed by the end of the week.
