Just wonder....what you all use to increase scent trail on your bait other than using a fresh bait and pinching it around so more scent release.

I dont know does anybody ever tried this....if it have been tried....then just ignore it......if never been tried and somebody willing to tried it just go on and if u have a good result on it then maybe u can share the result right here with others...

I used to fish for one species of catfish back home....the key is to use the stinkiest bait....or live bait.....the stinkiest bait most of the time will be a chicken gut....not a fresh one...but half rotten....i remember of reading an old article of using a cod liver oil capsule,hooked to the hook to increase scent....i replace the the stink bait with a liver oil capsule and have a good result with them without getting my hand dirty....

Recently i bump into this cheap cod liver oil capsule in aldi...its just euro 2 per bottle contain of 100 capsule.Tried them on the hook after threading a rag worm just to secure the rag and to increase scent trail.....most of the time i am using mackerel or squid piece for this....the result is a few colies,pollack and a wrasse....got a few bite that showing that the fish are only nibbling on to the capsule and rip them of the hook....i do believe that the condition we fished that day is not so favorable,the tide etc.....but i still have confident on using them next time.....

For anybody that do love bait fishing and fish a lot....feel free to try them....i dont do much of bait fishing....btw its just a euro 2 investment for a 100 capsules....maybe u get lucky for a fun session....or maybe it will only attract more dog fish to your bait.....cheeerrss....

I've often thought of using a swimfeeder on a rig to increase the scent trail but haven't got around to trying it yet. It works in freshwater so I don't see why it wouldn't work for sea fishing.

injected emulsified oils would be my first choice. have used rotten whole chickens for catfish in spain , but wouldnt recommend it :D

feeders full of mashed fish and oil can help, have got good congers on this.

saw a guy in spain use a fresh water swimfeeder stuffed with shrimp paste, the smell of it was ultra strong to the point of making you gag. but he didnt tell me where he got the paste. i always keep an eye out for it but havnt seen it anywhere.

Any Thai or chinese supermarket will stock shrimp paste, just don't give it a good sniff to see what it smells like...... you'll collapse lol.

a buddy of mine uses the shrimp paste and swears by it. dips his grip lead into it before casting, tried it a few tiems but dont think it significantly boosted my catch rates.

dont think it would be allowed in a competition- surely against the groundbaiting rule

I know guys who spray WD40 onto their bait and catch fish on it, I know other who wont use it on their reels in case it puts fish off :lol: :lol:

i use WD40 on fish baits for dogs to good effect, especially off the boat

Paul i fished against the shrimp paste guy in question in greystones and out fished him without any additives 4 to 1, frozen mackerel was what i had that he didnt or a lucky mark.

Here's an idea for ye

When your fishing for wrasse close in to the rocks

The small mussels that grow in clumps on the rocks

Gather a good lot up and smash them into small pieces the smaller they are the longer it takes them them to sink.

Using either a stone or chair leg to break them up add a few handfulls now and again around your float.

You'll be surprised :wink:

Oh and a few crabs legs wouldnt go a miss either :wink:

I've tried WD40 during a spate of doggie fishing and found that our catches *STOPPED* :shock: after we used it, and started again when we put on fresh bait....
But like the man says, some people swear by it.

I would think it is pointless putting it on a fresh (or freshly thawed) bait, as it will overpower the true scent of the original bait, making it less effective.
If you had the same bait on your trace for over 30mins, well then I might give it a shot ... :wink: (or else pack up and go home!!)

used WD40 off the boat in april this year on fresh and frozen mackeral to target rays.

out of 8 on the boat only 3 of us were using WD40. a total of 9 ray were caught, i had 3, another lad using Wd had 3, the other had 2, the remaining 5 anglers had just the 1 between them. the following day the oposite was the case the WD couldnt get a bite.

i used to cut up strips of mackeral to bait size,drop them in a coffee jar an top it up with cod liver oil, an let it sit for a few days. it works very well for me, by the way i take a pack of baby wipes with me cause your hands will stink like hell!!! :wink:

I've found in the past, if you fishing a beach it will be the guys a few pegs down from you that will benefit from your ground baiting techniques. Yes you will get a scent trail going to an extent, but dependant on what way the tide flow is going the slick that you will be creating will only draw the fish to your fellow competitors as the fish will have to pass there bait to get to were your offering is. For that reason I wouldn't use it on a beach. Even on a rough ground mark it can be the same result if your fishing close to someone else. If you are pleasure angling then you can go up the beach/rocks a bit and then put on you offerings there, then as the fish swim towards your groundbait hopefully you can catch them as they go past.

One of the guys in our club carries a length of pipe with lead moulded into the bottom to sink it just for this reason but only to use on rock marks. The tubing has a load of holes where the ground bait dissolves through and creates a trail from there. Seen it in action and yes it does work to a certain extent, it brings in a lot of small fish around the tubing. He never throws out any bait he has left over, it all gets mashed up and added to a carton in the freezer on an ongoing basis and then gets added to the tube frozen. It is surprising how long a frozen block of ground bait lasts in a comp. He might go through 2 in a 5 hour meet. I've seen 5 strap congers swimming around it on one occasion.

have tryed this one a few times and has worked well for me. mash up a tin of tuna with its brine....now cut strips of mac: to bait size and mount them on to the hook ( about 20 of them ) wiped with cotton. place each one into an ice cube tray with some of the tuna, making sure the eye of the hook is clear. bang it into the freezer, when your going out again drop them into a wide neck flask...wont fly off when casting and melts fairly quick, and as it melts flakes of tuna come off it. and use the mac: thats been refrozen a few times, the stuff that you would normally throw away. it has worked very well for me 8)

i was talking to the english who runs the pub/tackle shop in guillen in E.cork, he told me that the cod liver capsuils work very well for bass when put on 1 of the hooks on plugs esp. so when you are getting follows it lasts for 6/10 casts, flaten the barb first.
