Re: Where have the fish gone ?
As I understand it filter feeders such as mussels would be one of the worst things to eat because they ingest the plankton .
Would fish really be so harmful ? Doesn't the plankton cause mucus in the gills which in effect suffocates rather than poisons them ?
You will gather that I haven't been out to catch and eat any fish since my last post ( unintentional pun there ! )

SFPA investigation intensifies into cause of Irish mussel poisoning outbreak in France.jw wrote:i have heard a lot of reports of people becoming very sick after eating mussels recently,

The rapid alert triggered by the French authorities, who ordered the withdrawal from sale of Irish mussels suspected of causing biotoxin poisoning could have serious consequences for the processor concerned if the Sea-fisheries Protection Authority finds that food safety legislation has been breached.

If the fish aren't dead or dying, they are probably stuffed to the gills with all the dead lugworms, shellfish, sandeels etc. washing about.

Re: Where have the fish gone ?
Just back from a walk on the beach near Rossnowlagh, shore is liitered with dead sandeels of all sizes. Dead crangon and potato urchins aswell. Load of dead scorpion fish and shore rockling too. Other dead species were worm pipefish, lesser weavers, grey gurnard, shanny, sand goby, pollock, sole, plaice, flounder and dabs. Most of the species were juveniles but some chunky flounders and dabs were fecked too. Pretty desperate stuff to witness

Re: Where have the fish gone ?
My wife went for a walk on Murvagh Strand with some friends yesterday. They said they saw lots of dead sandeels on the beach, and birds eating them. I wonder if this will cause secondary poisoning in the birds?

Re: Where have the fish gone ?
I was up around bloody foreland over the weekend and the gulls were picking dead lug up off the beaches.... The sea was very red! Exactly like a peat stained river or lake. I'd say the area will be badly effected for the rest of the year to be honest!

Re: Where have the fish gone ?
As it says earlier in the thread, it takes the oxygen from the water, so unless you come across a Salmon with a snorkle, id say there all fuked too!flynnboy wrote:God how depressing ! Re: Where have the fish gone ?
Only good thing is, there's been plenty of rain in the rivers to let them run on rather than lying about the estuaries waiting for a chance. There's a good run of grilse in the Finn, and my local river has been like a motorway for them. Sea trout might be a different matter.
