Might see if the tackle shop has a mobile whiting defibulator on the way home. Just to be sure.

Like rockhunter says, the dead fish will stay in the foodchain, its likely these fat seals have had a few
Smoothie caught on ragworm on a 3 hook flapper 30 yards out, size 2 hook, last summer
Bass caught a few months ago on a 3 hook flapper 5 yards out on a strip of mackerel on a size 6 hook

I better get a whiting recovery bucket
The bucket can be a good idea for helping the fish recover and giving the hands a quick rub after baiting. Mind you maybe not in this weather! Also if you dip rag into a bit of sea water before casting they stay on the hook better. All in all your going to have to carry a bucket too. I often complain about dropping my little one off to stay the night in my mam's and moving tons of stuff, but going fishing is worse. That said I'll have two little ones to be shifting next month and no fishing allowed
As far as keeping a few fish it's up to everybody what they want to do. I'd say a lot more fish were kept for the table years ago before tesco came along. Personally I have never kept any but if someone wants to keep a few fish to eat I wont lose sleep over it. I think close in trawling and netting does more damage to our coast line. I've seen trawlers in Wexford during the summer and could see people on board they were so close.
Coalie is actually a nice fish. I don't eat cod because of over fishing and have not done for years. The butcher beside me does smoked coalie on a Friday and I have bought it from him many times. As long as your not dynamiting the shore for your dinner I'm sure Irish stocks will survive beebub.

Have you ever stayed in hospital and had their dinner. there is a big difference between what the doctors and the patients get to eat

Thankfully I have never had to stay in hospital and if/when I ever do, I will bring a packed lunch.

They're some great looking fish Shamoo. And on a 6 hook!
'As long as your not dynamiting the shore for your dinner I'm sure Irish stocks will survive beebub.'
Like I said, the three fish I took home were not going to survive anyway so I really don't see what the hoo haa has been in the first place!
I wonder if my 2nd shore report can top the 50 reply mark!!

Re: Beach near Killiney 5th Jan
This whole banter has brought up memories to an episode with a bailiff I encountered some 35 years ago on a small river near a hamlet in Austria where I grew up.
I used to fish trout there with worm as bait on a size 8 hook.
Your man gave out to me about small undersized trout swallowing the hook and that it was impossible to safely release them and demonstrated the proper procedure in tying a size 2/0 hook onto his own line, threading a huge worm onto it and cast into the river, just underneath a little waterfall, a brilliant spot.
After a few seconds he had a take, stroke hard and with a powerful backward swing, pulled out a 15cm trout.
The poor creatures live had expired the very moment it tried to taste the tempting morsel because the huge sharp hook penetrated from the inside of the mouth right through the roof of the head.
It looked a bit like deadbait intended to have a go for bigger trout.
The look on the bailiffs face remains forever deeply engraved into my memory. He never bothered me again, needless to say.

Re: Beach near Killiney 5th Jan
I dont keep anything to small or what isn't going to survive i put it back and natural will take its course. I dont agree with people targeting small fish for the table, but if you look at the report from the comp in arklow south beach just after christmas you will see that it sounded like that day more fish were killed that day that you will in over a year or two of fishing. So keep fishing and most of all enjoy it and enjoy the website reading it and writing on it.

Beebub - welcome to the site and may I wish you many years happy fishing.
I've just finished reading this thread and I found it very interesting. However, if you look back you will note that the blame rests solely with my good friend FMCN.
FMCN - Yep welcome to the site and well done on the fishing. Have to say coalfish wouldn't be my choice of one to eat. What did you think of it
I must ask him not to raise any more culinary questions especially if it's going to lead to a civil war
Wishing everyone a Happy New Year.

Re: Beach near Killiney 5th Jan
Well, just for my two cents worth, I bought a fillet of smoked Coalie last week and a fillet of smoked Cod as well. I baked the cod and boiled the coalie.
There was absolutely NO DIFFERENCE in taste whatsoever - swear to god!
I even gave a taste to the missus and asked her to tell me which was which, and she couldn't.
The difference in price however, as huge! €3.49 for the coalie and €9.50 for the same size fillet of Cod!
(And I mean, these were SMALL - the size of your hand!)

I didn't know that about whiting - I knew mackerel shouldn't be handled alright.
I usually use a heavy duty rubber glove when handling fish - however when I caught a bunch of whiting on Monday night I didn't have the rubber gloves with me, although it was so cold that night that the fish were warmer than my hands
