Great report Eoghanb, very unusual. I have only caught squid twice, (compared to at least 3 octopus), both times while boat fishing in Donegal Bay. The first time was on a flat calm day with blazing sunshine and I happened to look over the side to see a shoal of squid in the shadow of the boat, jigging with mackerel feathers produced lots of attacks but only one hook-up. It makes me wonder how often squid are responsible for the occasions when you can feel something having a go at feathers yet you can't seem to catch anything. I have seen those squid jigs in various catalogues and I think I will now get a couple and fish them on the end of the feathers rigs instead of a lead weight, the rings of spikes must be more effective at hooking them than a single hook.

eoghanb wrote:,I fished it on a single paternoster with a small weight on the bottom ,short casts about 20 meters and a slow gentle jig done the job ,if you fish with two people it would help sometimes 5 or 6 were following it
Thanks for sharing this experience eoghan. Hope you don't mind me asking if you positioned the sinker infront or behind the squid jig? I have tried a few times without additional sinker under daylight to no avail. Did you catch them off the bottom or mid-water? Appreciate you advice.

weight at bottom and dropper about 1.5 feet above it,water was about 20ft deep they were about a foot off bottom but they followed it up fairly often, try putting a glowlight on the bottom with a weight tied to it it seemed to keep them in the one spot
