Penn reels

#21 Post by Tryer »

Hi Pookie,

Yes, there is a lot of differences between the various 525 models. The mag reels were reengineered to accept a totally new spool as the GS spools had webs that stopped the use of a magnetic breaking system. I think they also done away with the GS one peice spool unit of the spindle being fixed into the spool. The mag reel spools run on a seperate spindle in a similar fashion to the latest ABU's. I think there was some work done in the gearbox as well. The new Supermags use ceramic bearings and altered magnets. The rest of the changes were merely cosmetic. Anybody looking to buy a Penn 525 should look at the three magnetic breaked reels as they are all excellent. The GS reels aren't as user friendly and only use centrifugal brakes. Some of them don't even have the break pins inserted!

Hope this helps a little.
