Is anyone on here aware of the dwindling cod stocks recently reported in the Irish sea ?

"Cod stocks in the Irish Sea and the west coast of Scotland have collapsed because of overfishing and politicians’ refusal to fix low enough catch quotas, according to a leading fisheries scientist who advises the European commission on fish quotas.

Dr Paul Connolly’s comments followed the European commission’s decision on Wednesday to recommend for the first time that all fishing cod in the two sea areas is stopped. The commission has previously stopped short of pushing for such draconian measures in such a wide area of sea because of the political difficulty of placing a ban on fishing such a key species."

Cod stocks in the west of Scotland and Irish Sea are in trouble but these fish were not caught from the west of Scotland or the Irish sea, by the looks of the heading they were caught in the east Cork area.

Hardly a million miles away, lets not be nitpicking eh??


Long and short of it the man took what he caught and was entitled to do so, some don't agree some do but no point in enforcing your personal opinions on anybody else. 10-15 cod taken by one angler is a fart in a thunderstorm compared to what a trawler takes in a hour.


Whats funny is while most people give out about trawlers, they'll throw a cod back and go to tesco and buy donegal catch fillets supporting the trawlers aswel.

Firstly very well done mate keep the great reports coming and never mind the crap from some on here.

I would suggest that some of the posters in this thread that they are most definitely in the wrong section, from the - in my opinion -silly comments, they should be in the course section. I don't spend good money on bait to release every fish I catch, which is more or less what some would advocate, I spend my money on bait to go to fish for fish for the table, if I wanted to return fish I would be a course fisherman, not an sea and game angler. When the "pressure" from angling has any great affect on the fish stocks then I will consider my position, in the mean time I will keep all the fish I want to, I can just hear the screams and the hair being pulled out now, well sad some people on here need to grow up and leave successful anglers to their rewards and in peace. As one poster said is it better to catch our own fish, by what has been called the most sustainable method of fishing, rod and line or buy some caught by the most destructive method of fishing even to be used, bottom trawling, not only does it destroy the fish it is after, it destroys countless numbers of under sized fish and ruins the sea bed to such an extent that nothing has survived and the area is dead for years, I know which I would and do choose? I am fully aware that there are some conscientious members who are genuinely concerned about the seas and the beaches we fish, I commend those for their efforts to keep the environment clean, but to those who say that an angler is wrong to keep his fish then please just back off, take a look at the big picture and decide where you stand, remember together we stand divided we fall, are you on the side of the angler or the side of the government men and the trawler men, make no mistake they are both after the one think, take as many fish as they can and to hell with the consequences.

I for one will take as many fish as I can use and some for friends, that is my right and to any here who do not agree, tough.

cheers for all the comments lads. firstly not one of them fish went to waist in fact when i got out of the bed this morn or afternoon i opened the fridge to find only 2 cod sitting in the fridge the wife had given them all away to family and friends and told me i had to go out tonight and get more hard life i have secondly there is no bag limit or minimum size for cod so i have done nothing wrong. i only keep cod that are 40 cm or bigger and in a few days when i have a good supply of fish for me and my family i will start to return all cod that are not longer than the 45cm ruler thirdly if anyone thinks it is wrong for one angler to take a couple dozen cod for culinary use then he must never have seen the destruction that trawling and netting is doing to the sea bed and fish stocks one local boat here have 200 nets mounted and ready to go 1 shot of them nets will kill more fish than i will in my entire lifetime so i dont now or proably never will feel guilty about killing a few fish for me and mine

I've never had as good a day of fishing as that so for starters, well done.

I've no real problem with you taking 20 or so decent size codling. I know they will be put to good use. My concern is that by posting a photo of them you may be adding something to the argument of the commercial fishing fleet who can refer to these catch reports in meetings with the powers that be. Possibly reinforcing their "Sure there's plenty more fish in the sea" argument. If I were to be so lucky as to catch a few decent cod I think I might play down my report a little, while still giving the impression that I had a good day out.

i'll just start off by saying,this is an open forum where people can debate what they like so long as its within the letter of the law.Yes this catch and release stuff is a bit monotonous these days but so is the bad weather and talk of the recession etc.
I personally know the catcher as do plenty of lads down here and i have nothing but admiration for him both as an angler and a person,just because he keeps a few fish for the table does'nt make him a bad person and as you say yourself in comparison to what damage the trawlers do in one scoop,its a drop in the ocean what anglers like John have taken and thats the end of it dot com.
My issue is with opinions like yours that tell me that if i wanted to return my fish i should take up coarse fishing.What gives you the right to tell me what type of fishing i should do!I do generally let a lot of my fish go when i catch them as "its my choice" not somebody elses .The same goes for people like you that keep their fish,if thats what you want to do then fair play,but do me a favour please refrain in the future from telling me what type of fishing i should participate in.Besides if i was to take up coarse fishing id more than likely never catch a bass again.

Before anyone else questions this fellas excellent results and starts on about the Cod stocks think first:

If you are a fish eater how much do you spend a year roughly on fish?

How much do you spend each year roughly on bait, tackle, petrol, food etc...

Does the price of question A exceed question B? Not likely... (If so maybe ya need to go on a diet!)

Therefore I believe its our given right to get some kind of reward from our efforts and expenses. A tasty trophy for our digesting mantle. If we ate more of our catch we would be saving money in the long run. Money we could put back into the sport to catch more fish all the while not providing profit for the commercials and helping our beloved hobby. Lost? Its a fishious circle!

To some people the reward is simply the fight, the landing, the bite or the picture. I'm well aware that a lot of people fish for sport and return everything. Different folks, different strokes. I for one love all sorts of seafood and would gladly see my freezer full of fresh caught Cod than Birdseye Fish Fingers or Donegal catch.

If more people only ever ate rod and line caught fish the commercial fishing industry would be hammered down in size thus decreasing discard and massively improving the fish population for us anglers. A crazy notion! May seem improbable but not impossible.

Of course there is an economical debate here but until someone does the research and exposes the annual/monthly financial earnings of both industries we wont go into that...

anglers couldnt damage the shoaling migratory species stocks (cod, mack, haddock, coley, whiting etc) if they tried. end of story. as we all know, its the trawlers that ruin ecosystems, reek havock, and devastate stock populations to the point of extinction (as they had already done).

however, i would argue differently for some other species!. its species that are territorial and return to and stay in the same place for most of their lives that should not be killed and kept at will! species like bass, wrasse, pollack, sea trout, conger, mullet and so on and so on. and there are some instances of 'resident' fish that can occur in some species such as some ray, rockling, and some flatties, amongst others, that stay in one place that should not be killed at will either. removing numbers of these fish from a local niche ecosystem really can be detrimental and result in it taking a long time to recover!

its nothing to do with being jealous of a good catch, or tree-hugging, or, on the other hand, being 'owed' anything by the sea (for money spent on angling efforts etc) or it being ok as long as you are consuming everything that you kill, its actually just maybe a little bit of mis-information or lack or understanding of the whole picture and how it works.

i say kill and eat as many cod and mack as you wish when out recreational angling but watch out for all the other resident/territorial types!!! maybe take one or two of these but just be weary! "sustainability"...

And that folks is it in a nut shell! So C&R preach all you like but really shore angling makes no impact on these species at all.

If you look at Bhoy's catches as a whole, ok massive looking for us East Coasters but really not much over the course of a years fishing for consumption. An angler that gets out and does the business like that needs to be commended for the type of sessions we all live for.
