have to go with eric here the only bait that works all the time on the boat for codling is macks has never let me down it gives out a better scent than most baits because of the oils it releases in the water

just watching that vid and think the "owner" of them hooks could do with a few new ones they dont seem too sharp :?: no wonder iceland has such good cod fishing  makes trawling look barbaric in comparison ,at least someone can look after their natural resourses ,even if they are bankrupt as a country,i think thier fishing industry is all they have left now,i dont think they even lock the banks at night any more

ya i have to say i agree it's all down to venue whats around and distance

Traces depend on venue, conditions and bait being used.

Venue demanded heavy leads, big casts & big baits. Pulley pennell ticked all the boxes!

Which venue :)
ShaneH wrote:Cos a 3 hook flaper will not stand a chanc with a big cod on it and u won't get much distans with 3 big baits it's just not a big fish rig

Is that right shane.

What if you used 200lb mono for the trace body and 150lb snoods with 6/0 hooks.

Would that not be able to handle a big cod... all 2lb or so of it.

What if you dont need distance will a three hook flapper not be good enough then. What if the fish are 30 yards out will you not be able to cast a three hook flapper that distance.

As for not being able to get three big baits out at distance I would be confident that I can get three big baits out as far as is needed on most venues.

A flapper is not a big fish rig.......... I caught a stingray of around 100lb off fenit peir on a 3 hook flapper a couple of years ago on a size two kamasan and 20lb amnesia snood. I suppose thats not a big fish

A 14lb Bass in youghal when fishing with a three hook flapper for cod two years ago.

What I trying to say here lads is that there is no one trace for all situations and anyone that says there is is a cabbage :D

When deciding on a trace at a particular time you need to think of the species you are after, venue you are on, distance you need to fish at size/ type of your bait and the conditions you arer fishing in amoung other things.
