cracking report dave. just a pity it did'nt fish a bit better for you man. how did you talk the missus into doing rod caddy i'll bet the visa suffered for it

Great meeting you at last Dave. It was a shame we didn't get you a bass - that mark we fished on Thursday afternoon definitely looked very "bassy", maybe the easterly wind put them off - but at least you got a bunch of pollock there. I chucked a range of lures out including Xlayers, Asturies, Shallow Feeds, Tide Minnows but not a hint of a bass. But at least we got a few fish on the beach later. I got one more flounder shortly after you left and then packed up. I was shocked to get a whiting on a south coast beach in September - maybe they followed you down from the east coast

so half an hour later we were setting up the beach rods, at least me and melissa were, I found out first hand what an important player she is in the angling success story that is Rockhunter

You will have to get your wife to set up your rods too Unfortunately I haven't got Melissa to bait the hooks yet - although I might be pushing my luck if I suggested that

There is a crazy amount of poaching going on around there lately
Im not having a go but a lot of work is going into trying to protect this area and the pics dont really help....
there has been some success of late with catching poachers im led to believe....

Sorry for posting pics of a mark where i didnt catch any bass ,,,i'm nearly glad now that i didnt catch any i think that the poaching and spearfishing was going on long before i got there, and will probably go on long after those pics are forgotten about Maybe you should get on to the tourist board and get them to remove all references to bass in the Waterford area.Theres pics of bass everywhere down there, leaflets and free guides giving directions to the marks, do you think the poachers need them??,,dont think so . All the road signage points you to these beaches and tells you what you might expect to catch there (if youre lucky ). Its probably the locals that are doing it anyway and theyre not waiting to read my reports of marks which they know like the back of their hands. I'm not into posting reports from Disneyland with Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck in the background hiding the coastline in case Paddy the Poacher is surfing the net. You never know, maybe some of the guys off the site might read it , think it looks like a nice place, and head down to fish the mark spending a few bob in the local economy along the way.Anyways i'm sick of posting pics of fish with a ruler in the background. BTW,,,There were half a dozen foreign anglers setting up as we left,,,,,,,,,,,and that was before i wrote the report

If your quite finished with your rant mate.. I was only filling you in on the situation in the area and the possible reason that you didn't catch...
And for your information the pics are not of the mark that is advertised by the fisheries board... but of a beach next to it that is a better spot or at least was at one time
Id be glad to show you other spots down here that would produce but not if there was going to be a report done on it....
There is a lot of poaching going on down here and admittedly the majority is be semi locals.
As to the foreign lads setting up.... I know a couple of them and of the ones i know all fish are returned and good marks kept to them selves.... so I dont see you point there

Fair enough,sorry if i went over the top, but wheres the racism???,stated a fact, guys were setting up that didnt speak english, presumed they were foreigners.Didnt think the point of this site was to keep the good marks to yourself Didnt find the mark through a local,,,,though only the locals would recognise it from the pics. Lets leave it at that,unless you want to get the last word in,,,lets just say that im not in the business of promoting poaching or such like.

Its a two way street Al When i'm on a beach at night i spend half the time counting my lucky stars

I also bring my other half on fishin' trips to carry my rods too.
They're handy to have around for the likes of that....................

It is unfair to accuse Dave of racism - I dont recall any remotely racist comment in any of Dave's posts. His point was that the mark we fished was not a secret bass mark known only to locals. The foreigners setting up as we left were elderly and most likely tourists rather than resident here so they had managed to find it.
I would agree with not identifying a good mark in name or by photographs but since we didn't did get a hint of a bass it would more likely discourage anybody fishing (or poaching) there.
But thanks for the advice that the lack of bass was probably due to poaching rather than our poor fishing techniques or easterly winds.

Ive said it before and I'll say it again, the whole idea of all these "secret marks" is just juvenile rubbish IMHO. Surely the more real "anglers" that know of a spot , the more cash into the local community ? Would it also not be fair to say that the more anglers that fish a spot then the less time it would be deserted hence more difficult to poach it? My God it seems here sometimes that people are more concerned with the bloody fish than they are with the actual local communities that can benifit from angling?

Sea Angling is worth over 140 MILLION on average to the Scottish Economy every year (Source TSF Oct 09), surely we should be opening up the whole coastline of Ireland , sharing all our marks and try to get people away from poaching and into services related to angling than keeping all the marks to ourselves ?

Why bother ?

Is it so that we can go out and take a load of Fish Mod Edit:saltydog photos and then post them up with locations like , "Ireland", "Galway", "Cork" and of course all the silly ones posted by people just for their mates rather than for the good of the angling community?

Nice report eyes, those marks are well known both locally and nationally and that sign is only there for "historic" purposes

In the last two editions of TSF there have been two "two page Ads" about Clifden and this month Waterville, both mention local marks and both are paced there with a view to stimulating angling Tourism in those localities, surely this is the way forward rather than the "keep it under you hat" approach??
