I can see your Sea Vs Coarse/game similarity between the shad & salmon/seatrout. And maybe why the salmon & seatrout are considered "freshwater" fish and the Shad a "marine" fish.

Re: Shad at St Mullins
down there today fished on low water and got three, dropped two, also a bonus brown trout for the species list. great craic. i was suprised at how many dead ones there were in the water, if there being caught on lures i dont really see the reason why they should be going back dead.

the main reason why u saw that many death fish is not enough of safe handling with shad practice for some anglers. U cant avoid deep hooking of fish which also caused some of death. But treat them with wet hands or wet net working well. This is very fragile fish and dont like contacts with ground, either fly like Ryanair when back to the river

then people would fish to eat them and as this is the only 3 weeks of the year id imagine it would have a devastating effect on thier population..

Re: Shad at St Mullins
NOW THATS JUST PROVOCATIVE.....!!! the river should probably be licensed to deter everybody from desending on it. was talking to a local of the older generation and he told me the river used to bubble with em in the 60's and theres less each year.
