I'd definately say that the top one is a whiting. We had to ID lots of 10cm ones on a survey one time and got pretty good at doing them! The key is to feel for the teeth as they protrude out of the jaw. From photos however :? ... its more elongated than a pollack, which it can look similar to and the upper jaw is longer than the lower. The lateral is no way near as curved as a pollocks.
The bottom one is for sure a juv pollock. The lower jaw jutting out and the curved lateral line over the pectoral fin are the give aways. The colouration provides it with camoflague in the kelp but they loose this as they get bigger and move out to wrecks and reefs. wish they would just do the opposite and we could get some beauties from the shore!?

Well done on a cracker session, must say the Dee has never let me down (either time i was there!)
P.s the little dudes head lights are awesome!

yet again, thanks everyone for all the replies, its greatly appreciated. i'm only back to fishing this past year, and had'nt wet a line since i was an ankle nipper myself. i bought spinning rods last summer for me and the wee man and after our first trip out we have'nt passed a week by without getting out for at least one session. :P the wee man even tells me he dreams about catching fish  so we are still gaining knowledge and skills as we go. OH and as for the baseball cap light, if your looking to get one mack daddy they are the biz and only cost £1, yes thats right only a quid out of rugs etc in bridge street, belfast city centre. bought them last week and there were loads left.

Nice wee session considering the wind would have cut you in two   I have to admit that wee man of yours is definitely keen on his fishing I didnt see his eyes move from the rods once the whole time I was there. Lets hope the next time I see you down there I'm also wetting a line.

good to meet you both
