Mackerel Fishing-Brandon Pier Co.Kerry

#164 Post by Gozer »

Went fishing here twice last week 13th and 16th.
13th-Fished from 2 hours to High Tide to half hour after.Caught 23 macks and a small pollack.
16th-Fished again from about 2 hours before high tide to about half hour after.Better fishing high tide was at approx 8pm.Got 35 macks.

I have been fishing here every summer for over 20 years and would say that
the fishing is average.

Tips:Use silver or other bright rigs as the water here is dark and deep normal feathers do not seem to work well here. You also have to fish deep in order to get the fish. Also a position at the sea end of the pier seems to fish better.

Hope this may be of help to someone.

Mackeral in Waterford

Quite a few Mackeral about off the pier in Helvick tonight 1 hr before and up to high tide. Dwindled pretty soon after. A few Pollock around, too. A bit of lead flying around, bring your hard hats!

Out this morning at 0800. Nothing before or after high tide. (except a 2 inch sand eel that took on a mackeral feather!)

massive!

#177 Post by kieran »

Never mind the quantity, feel the width...

fished a new mark in south mayo, small pollack, one nice fish to 3 lbs, recent reports of fish to 7 lbs at dusk on the food, lost several more, most around the 1lb mark. Moved to a bigger headland and lost a stonking mackerel at the edge, jumped clear out of the water was convinced it was a sea trout. Saw a sea otter and ten minutes later landed a massive mackerel, close if not over 2lbs, over 50 cms long! definitely a pb.

This was two hours after HW and there is still 8 metres of water there - I'll be back although it is a massively long walk from the nearest road!
Kieran Hanrahan

Time spent fishing is never time wasted...

2015 targets - a triggerfish, a specimen bass, a three bearded rockling to complete the set and something big and toothy from certain north Mayo deep water marks
