to jion the leader to the loop...

pass leader through the loop.

make 4 turns around the loop.

2 back over the 4 turns just made.

pass the tag end of leader back out the loop on opposing side of the loop entered.

add spit(!), pull tight and trim

if anyone has a better explanation or diagram- let's have it! hard one to explain clearly, but a great knot.

What are you using this knot for?? I have tried to follow the diagram and am not sure what you intend.

ahh Pat it's a great knot for jioning shock to mono. tried to find a better diagram but still lookin?!
the spider hitch is tied in the mainline. the shockleader is then passed through the loop. press the loop together and wrap the shock 4 times around the doubled up mono(from the loop). now make two turns back over the four turns just made. pass the tag end back out through the loop. important that the tag end goes back through the loop on the opposite side it entered at the start.  i'll find a diagram.

Know bout the Bimini but you've still managed to confuse me....

 it is the bimini, it's just called a spider here??????/ :x confused now???

OK, the reason I asked was I tried to follow the diagram and it ended up in just a loop which would be OK for attacing to a swivel, I have to head to work now but will give it another go tomorrow and see how it turns out. I keep trying to find a really good knot for shock to mono as I find after a day fishing I can easily break the knots I use. Dont ask me names I just have them in my head. I am going to try another that I came across on some TV program the next time I am out. I have not been able to get out because of an injury but hope to try somewhere with easy walking like Wicklow pier during the week.

If you get a decent diagram let me know.

Cheers

ahh Pat this is a great shockleader knot. it supposedly has 99% breakin strain. i stopped using the old ones after losin a ray when the knot parted- only used once previous.

the loop you are left with at the end of the mainline is then jioned to the shockleader.

When done properly the Binimini should act as a Big Spring the Numerous turns acting like a shock absorber. Its a perfect rough ground leader knot.

Sounds something like an Albright Knot (see above link in "other Knots"), but surely it's the same number of turns up as it is down. :?:

I never bother tying the loop first, I just double over the mono and wrap up and down around that and trim the tag ends. Very strong handy to tie knot.

The Bimini and the Spider Hitch are two different knots, the latter being the easiest to tie and the best way to feather down from 15lb main line to 60lb shocker.

Both of these knots are meant for double line, mostly used in Big Game fishing, so that the angler can wind the double line in through the guides and let the Wireman get to the leader.

Describing knots always confuses the hell out of me but a simple way to use the spider hitch is to tie it and then use the loop to tie like a normal leader with the shock having a tumb knot.

For rough ground I use the spider which is wrapped around a number of turns around the shock then the shock goes up and over the knot and through the loop. This was in SA a couple of years back and never breaks on me. It always breaks the line. I wouldn't attempt a bemini and I wouldn't like to be retieing 6 or 7 times in a session fishing the places I fish. I understand it has a cushioning affect thats for fishing big game fish but pulling out of a snag pressure it put on the knot slowly.

back again, I have tried once again to follow the instructions, is this how the loop should look and is it supposed to tighten up. (see the loop). The second photo shows the complete knot but the two dont slide together Is this correct or have I blown it again. Help !!!!!
Photos should be the other way up.

Thats the knot I use but its not a bemini. As I said the mainline always breaks first. I only use it for rough ground as the shock tag end sticks out perpendicular to the line. For normal fishing I use a the spider hitch loop to tie a normal leader as it goes through the rings more smoothly for distance.

the bimini knot is a strong and springy knot and some people swear by it. pesonally i will not use it , when pulling for a break over rough ground if there is any weakness in your main reel line it will always break first and you can lose a lot of line. i have fished next to people who have gone through 5 or 6 reels using this knot, when i would only have to tie on a new leader and use only the one reel.

I agree 100%....I would never use a Bimini on a shore rig.

To my knowledge the Bimini is best suited for big game fishing and it comes into play on rods that are very stiff, if the fish takes a turn then the stretch in the Bimini will possible save a snap off.

Another down side to the Bimini from the shore is the amount of stretch if your snagged up close in....it can fire the lead back at you and do harm to either you or someone standing close by...if anyone remembers the X-ray shot of the guys head with the sinker lodged in his skull...that wasn't done with a cast it was done with a sinker coming out of a snag and hitting him in the face.

Spider-Hitch every time IMO.

Hi,

Would have to agree. The Bimini is too bluddy strong! Everytime I break out of a snag at range the line becomes so badly stretched/damaged (cause the knot won't break) I end up respooling entire reels after just one hang up. Still though if you're looking for the ultimate leader knot then the payoff might be worth it...
