Hello peolple , ive just started to get into bait fishing and was wondering which is best, Sand eel, Shrimp ,Squid, Crab, or Razor fish ?
Ive only got my hands on sand ell and squid for now , sand eel is very effective for me but squid only seems to catch dog fish. So some help would be great thanks!

yup sandeel is a great all round bait, and will catch most species, squid for some reason isn't too popular in irish waters, but over in parts of the uk it's a firm favourite....unusual really since the same species swim in both waters! frozen mackeral, crab(a bit expensive) are also very good baits, while i don't use razorfish or shrimp/prawn enough to know if they are any good frozen.
the most important thing with frozen baits is that they are of good quality. the best baits have been caught, sorted and blast frozen in well under an hour, and kept fully frozen the whole way til they are on the beach/rocks with you.....poor baits will be very soft, and burst easily in your hands and when pulling a hook throw them. this can be frustrating at times, as some tackle shops might not recieve regular deliveries, and the bait can be in total s***. correctly frozen sandeels should feel firm even when defrosted, while mackeral tends to be a little soft even if it has been stored correctly the whole time.
the trick is keep your bait semi frozen in a cooler bag, then just take out sandeels etc as you need. the sandeel should still be rigid, just gently bend the eel in your hands to soften it slighly and slide it onto the hook. same goes with mackeral. take the whole mackeral out of the bag, cut off what you need, it should still be pretty frozen, hook it up, and secure with bait elastic.avoid buying mackeral fillets, i think they're crap
squid is a pretty firm bait, and is easy to hook up, and cut. but keep it frozen all the time, and look after it like any other bait.
finally, buy packets of bait the come in vacuum packs, and that carry brand names such as ammo, or kb baits. both are excellent, especially kb, but i'm unsure as to if his bait is available nationwide. you'll very quickly learn what baits and suppliers are best, and more importantly what to avoid.

Cheers,
Patrick
