Got there with high hopes of getting some nice fish off the shore and getting a nice job on a fishing boat. First few trips of the beach were allright a few takes and finaly landed a striped bass around 7 or 8lb relatively small for montauk. That was about the best of it off the shore for me really had a few more takes every now and again but no more fish. Was never really able to reach the better spots due to distance and lack of transport. Maybe next time.
The boat fishing was a different story all together eventually managed to get a job on a charter boat that could take up to 35 people was a bit hectic when full but I could fish when it was quiet. Also when I wasnt working I could get fishing for free. Basically I baited hooks for people and undid tangles not very difficult work. There was two types of fishing Fluke (Big Flatties) and live eels for striped bass. The bass fishing was what I worked at but did some fluke trips as well. Ye got more fish fluking but striper fishing you could land some huge fish. Here is a 40lb and a mid 30lber.

Fluke fishing was good fun nearly always catching fish my best fish was 8.5lb and a couple of 6lbers. Would often catch ray and what I think are smoothies as a by catch got both to fish to around 10lb. I think the ray was a type of thornie. Very good fight off the shark. Second last trip for bass I was helping a man fish and hooked a bass and landed it for him as they fight seriously hard. It wasnt even big for a striper but I was happy to get it he was exactly 20lb. Didnt get a pic but I was happy. Last fluke trip I caught a 7lber and could be in an american fishing magazine.
Just home today and could be going fishing tomorrow already. :D

Nice fishing. Did you try some SWFF for the bass?

I tried very hard for them on the fly but didnt have any luck had a couple of pulls and was bitten off by bluefish but that was about it on the fly. Not having a car restricted my access to the better swff spots.

When is the best time of year to fish Montauk for bass?

September to november is the best time for the really big fish with big 40lbers from the shore and even bigger ones up to 60lb as well. The summer isnt too bad as well you can get fish but the really big fish wouldnt be as common of the shore. Still loads of people were getting fish to 35lb of the shore most of the time I was there.
